What Is Sensitive Skin and How Do You Treat It?

If you have sensitive skin you know how frustrating it can be to find skincare and cosmetics. You're not alone.

Reports have shown that about 50% of women and 40% of men diagnose themselves with sensitive skin to some degree! Being that about half of us have heightened skin sensitivity, it's important seek beauty brands that make products that are gentle and free of harmful ingredients.

Oxygenetix has always had this in mind, creating gentle skin-loving formulas for everyone. As the pioneer of breathable makeup, Oxygenetix is formulated with breathable ingredients designed to safely conceal compromised skin. See for yourself why Oxygenetix is the only doctor approved post-procedure cosmetic even the most sensitive can use. You can find more information and purchase your Oxygenetix online here.

What is Sensitive Skin?

There is actually no concrete definition for sensitive skin, as it is a self-diagnosed condition with many factors involved.

Some data suggests that a generally accepted definition is a reduced tolerance to cosmetics and toiletries. However, many people experience sensitive skin for other reasons.

There is strong evidence to suggest that barrier function and inflammation may be involved in sensitizing the skin. A compromised skin barrier allows allergens and irritants into the skin. This can cause inflammation which further sensitizes and damages skin cells.

What Does it Feel Like?

Those with sensitive skin describe their skin as being highly reactive to cosmetics and the environment. They complain of itching, burning, stinging, and tightness which can all be worsened by extremes in temperature or sunlight exposure. Stress, pollution and hormones can make sensitive skin even worse.

Treating Sensitive Skin

When treating patients with sensitive skin, dermatologists work to repair and maintain a healthy barrier function.

Repairing Your Moisture Barrier

Your moisture barrier is the outermost layer of your skin, your stratum corneum. It is the final frontier of a skin cell's life cycle before it sheds and makes way for younger cells. This is your body's first line of defense and responsible for keeping your skin hydrated and functioning properly.

A compromised skin barrier can be repaired by replenishing moisture loss with humectants. One of the most powerful humectants is Hyaluronic Acid, which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. When combined with barrier molecules such as dimethicone, you can prevent transepidermal water loss.

Oxygenetix Hydro-Matrix balances the skin's moisture levels with a maximum amount of Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium PCA, and a multi-silica gel that protects the skin from losing precious moisture. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists use Hydro-Matrix post-procedure to help support the skin's renewal, maintain moisture levels, and protect against pollutants. It is hypoallergenic, doesn't clog your pores, and is your best defense for a healthy barrier function.

Sensitivity Prevention

Your dermatologist will also recommend preventing contact with products that can irritate your skin.

Look for labels such as “hypoallergenic”, “sensitivity tested”, “paraben-free”, “phthalate-free”, “non-comedogenic” and “fragrance-free”. Read our article about why ‘Fragrance-Free is the Way to Be’ to learn more about harmful fragrances in cosmetics and how to avoid them.

In general, it is best to stick with products that have a limited number of ingredients. Just because a label says "all-natural" doesn't necessarily mean it will be gentle on your skin. Many natural ingredients can cause allergic reactions.

Use dermatologist recommended skincare and cosmeceuticals so your skin is in the safe zone.

Oxygenetix is recommended by medical professionals around the world for patients with sensitive skin. Many with rosacea, acne, eczema, and hyper-sensitive skin have finally found the relief they've been looking for with Oxygenetix breathable formulations.
