5 Makeup Tips To Save Your Complexion This Halloween

Have you ever looked in the mirror the day after Halloween and been horrified by the sight? Maybe you forgot to take your makeup off and now you look ten times more spooky than the night before. Or maybe you woke up to pesky new pimples or a rash from cheap Halloween makeup. Whatever the case, that doesn't have to be your narrative this year. This year you can save your complexion with these 5 Halloween makeup tips!

1. Take the time to prep your skin

Prepping your skin is a crucial step anytime you do your makeup, but especially when you want it to last through all your Halloween festivities!

To create a smooth and even base for your makeup, gently exfoliate your skin beforehand. Exfoliating will help get rid of dead skin, oil, and bacteria that can cause breakouts. For our tips on how to best exfoliate read our blog post: Exfoliating for Your Skin Type.

Make sure your skin is clean and dry before your makeup magic begins.

2. Apply a protective base

Prime the skin with a hydrating moisturizer like Oxygenetix Hydro-Matrix. Hydro-Matrix is non-greasy and plumps the skin creating the ideal base for makeup. You can apply it to your lips as well for an extra hydration boost on those chilly October nights.

Your foundation is one of the most important elements for a makeup look that stands the test of time. Avoid thick foundation creams that clog your pores and powder makeup that doesn't stay put. Oxygenetix foundations are the best choice for those with skin sensitivities and those that want to take care of their skin. Both Oxygenating and Acne Control Foundation form a second skin, protecting your complexion from outside pollutants and bacteria. The satin matte finish is the perfect texture for any Halloween look you decide to create on top.

3. Choose safe costume makeup

Cheap makeup you can buy from Halloween pop-up stores oftentimes contains toxic ingredients that can cause skin irritation. Find theatrical makeup instead that has FDA approved ingredients. Look for words like oil free, alcohol free, and non-comedogenic.

Perform a patch test when using any makeup you are unfamiliar with. You can do this by applying a small amount of the product to a clean, clear patch of skin. Wait 24 hours to see if your skin reacts poorly to the makeup.

4. Use caution with special effects makeup

When using adhesives or glues, use products that are specifically designed to be used on the face. Don't use superglue or other glues you have around your house. If you are gluing fake eyelashes on, apply the glue to the eyelash first and be careful not to get the glue into your eye and seal your eyelid shut!

Fake blood contains red dye that may cause irritation to your skin. You can make fake blood yourself with corn syrup flour and red food coloring!

The Dermatology Center shares this safe recipe for fake blood:

How to make fake blood:

To make fake blood, you will need the following: water, corn syrup, food coloring (red), flour, cornstarch, or chocolate syrup.

  1. Begin by combining water with the corn syrup.
  2. Add drops of red food coloring to the mixture until the desired shade is reached.
  3. Let the mixture set at room temperature for ten minutes, and your fake blood is ready.

5. Wash your makeup off before bed

Before retiring for the night it is important to take off any prosthetics, lashes, fangs, and makeup you have on. Not only will you wake up feeling loads better, but your skin will also look a lot more refreshed and less like the walking dead.

It is not recommended to simply rip off prosthetics or anything else you have stuck to your face. The type of adhesive you used will determine the solvent you need to safely and efficiently remove it. Be gentle and take your time.

Use gentle soap and warm water to take off the rest of your makeup. Cleanse the first time to take off the bulk of the cosmetics, and a second time to really clean the skin.

Replenish any moisture loss and protect your skin overnight with Oxygenetix Hydro-Matrix. If your skin is irritated or needs some extra love after a night of frights, Hydro-Matrix will come to the rescue. With Oxygenetix patented ingredient Ceravitae® encouraging cellular turnover, and aloe vera calming the complexion, your skin will be in tip-top shape in no time.

Enjoy your Halloween tricks this year and remember to treat your skin with care!
