So You Forgot Sunscreen? Here's What Dermatologists Recommend to Ease the Burn

No intro, no fluff, just right to the good stuff. If you're feeling the burn you need relief, and fast! Here are the top tips dermatologists recommend for treating a sunburn as soon as you get it.

GET OUT OF THE SUN

Perhaps obvious advice here, but if you're still enjoying your vacation it can be tempting to stay outside, sunburn and all. While you are recovering, it is best to stay in the shade and wear tightly woven clothing over your burn to avoid more UV exposure. 

HYDRATE

Being out in the sunlight and heat can dehydrate you. The American Association of Dermatology (AAD) explains, "A sunburn draws fluid to the skin’s surface and away from the rest of the body." Drink water throughout the day, especially after a lot of sun exposure to help your body heal and hydrate.

TAKE COOL BATHS OR SHOWERS

You can take cool baths or showers as often as you want to help ease the pain. The cold water will feel heavenly on your burning skin. 

The AAD recommends patting yourself dry and applying moisturizer immediately afterwards so your skin retains some moisture.

USE A MOISTURIZER THAT CONTAINS ALOE

According to the AAD it is best to, "use a moisturizer that contains aloe vera or soy to help soothe sunburned skin." Aloe vera has been used for thousands of years to treat sunburned skin. Not only is aloe soothing and cooling, it contains antioxidants and is antimicrobial, helping prevent the growth of bacteria.
