Is Slugging Safe for Acne-Prone Skin?

Slugging has gained popularity in the last few years, and with colder winter weather upon us, it may be tempting to try. This K-beauty protocol has the intention of trapping moisture into the skin, leaving a soft moisturized face in the morning, but is slugging safe for acne-prone skin? Is it safe at all?

So what is slugging?

Slugging is a skincare term that involves slathering your entire face in a layer of vaseline or petroleum jelly. If you are someone who suffers from extremely dry or dehydrated skin, this method just might help. By creating a barrier on the skin overnight, your pillow won't soak up any moisture from your skin and your face won't be subject to the dry air from your heaters or AC unit.

Is Slugging Safe for Acne?

If you have acne-prone skin, then you know how important it is to educate yourself about the effects of skincare techniques and products. Slugging is one of those viral skincare trends that is not going to be beneficial for acne.

Acne-prone skin needs to be able to breathe. Oxygen is what helps our wounds heal, and by covering your skin with vaseline you are blocking vital airflow to your acneic skin. Dr. Yoram Harth, MD told MDAcne, "Although Petrolatum is not regarded as comedogenic, it can clog the skin pores and make acne worse. If you are acne-prone or acne-prone, it’s best to avoid petrolatum and anything that’s occlusive."

Vaseline will block your pores, trapping in bacteria, sebum, and other debris that can cause acne. This is not ideal for skin that needs to heal.

Is Slugging Safe for Anyone?

People have been using Vaseline for years to help with dry skin conditions such as eczema and chapped lips. However, covering your face with petroleum jelly isn't ideal for the overall health and well being of your skin. Skin needs to be able to breathe to be in optimal repair.

In addition, petroleum is classified as a carcinogen. In fact Dr. Yoram Harth, MD told MDAcne that, "In the U.S., it’s illegal to sell unrefined petrolatum in skincare due to concerns of carcinogenicity. The FDA requires formulations with over 30% petrolatum to register with the FDA."

The Better Alternative

For acne-prone skin, moisturizers that are oil-free are ideal. Oxygenetix Acne Control Hydro-Matrix contains a blend of acne-safe hydrators like hyaluronic acid and sodium pca while also allowing the skin to breathe with a patented formulation.

Oxygenetix Oxygenating Hydro-Matrix is also a great option for acne-prone skin and all other skin types. All Oxygenetix products have an aloe base that soothes the skin while helping reduce inflammation. Our Hydro-Matrix moisturizers are ultra-hydrating while protecting the skin and allowing it to heal.
